Staying up to date

A build is identified by the UTC time it was built, like 20260910074525, not by a semantic version. Higher is newer, and that is the whole scheme. s2u --version prints what you are running.

Terminal window
s2u update

That covers a copy installed by the one-liner or built from source. It downloads the release for your platform, verifies its checksum, and replaces the binary in place.

An apt-installed copy is owned by the package manager, so s2u update will say so and leave it alone. Use sudo apt upgrade. A winget install updates through winget.

Beta builds ship before stable ones. They are published as pre-releases, which means a stable install cannot see them by construction rather than by policy.

Terminal window
s2u update --channel beta

For apt, use the beta suite in your sources line instead of stable.

The channel is one machine-wide setting shared by the command line and the desktop app, which is deliberate: two clients on one machine disagreeing about which build is current causes more confusion than it saves.

The app checks on its own and offers an update when one exists. Builds installed from the Microsoft Store are updated by the Store on its own schedule.
